Saturday 27th August 2011 has been set as the date for the great Thomond Swim which will see members of Limerick Masters Swimming Club take on one of the toughest challenges of their annual calendar. They will be joined by other Swim Ireland Masters swimmers from Dublin, Cork and Galway.
Now in its third year since being revived after a break of many years the swim is once again embedded as one of the great annual sporting spectacles. The sporting rivalry between the swimmers is immense. All want to be able to look back and say that they won the Thomond Swim in 2011. The swim is tough but after a number of practice runs in the coming weeks under the watchful eye of the members of the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue the competitors will be ready. The course is set to run from the slip of St. Michael’s Boat Club upstream under Sarsfield’s Bridge as far as Thomond Bridge and back down to Shannon rowing club. Even describing the rou
te engenders a sense of pride in the proud history of this great place. This will not be lost on the swimmers who will be representing their city on this great occasion as they wear the Treaty Stone on their swim caps. Even the ducks and swans will appear to respect the efforts of participants as they will be seen to skuttle clear of approaching swimmers.
