Ulster Masters Gala Nov 14th

The Ulster Masters Gala will take place on november 14th in Lisburn. We plan to run an overnight trip with bus transport for this one, leaving on friday evening, nov 13th and returning after the gala on saturday nov 14th. The hotel is within walking distance of the pool.

These cold grey frosty days are not anyone’s favourite time of the year, and with so much bad news around it’s becoming difficult to feel upbeat, however sometimes it’s the hard times that bring out the very best in people as was seen in the UL Arena on January 31st when dozens of swimmers from Limerick and Clare came together to break a few records and make more than a few euro’s for Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. Following on the huge success of the English Channel fundraiser swim by eight Channel Swimmers in September 2008, they decided to go the extra mile, or millionth meter and show their support for this hugely deserving charity by getting everyone they knew into the water from dawn until dusk on the 31st and rounding off the total raised for MDI to well over €50,000.
Completing a total distance of 1,019,100 meters on the day swimmers of all ages and all levels of ability took to the pool in adjoining lanes in a festival atmosphere and the 1,000,000th meter mark was finally passed at 5:35pm by Finn Brady Halmschlag (See Photo) It was a day filled with fun and excitement, and true to form, no small level of competition between the various swimmers trying to see just how far they could push themselves, and whose distance or time they could beat. There were personal triumphs of all kinds on the day including the swim by Jason Slattery who has MD himself and yet swam 200m to beat his granddad’s total of 150m! Members of Limerick Masters Club swam over 200,000 meters, but such was the support among the swimming community for this event that Lahinch Masters club swam at 7 pm in their own pool in Co. Clare and Connaught Swim Team also joined in the spirit of the swim on the day. There were literally dozens of young swimmers from all the clubs in the region in the water on the 31st, in addition to senior squads and members of Limerick Triathlon Club, UL Waterpolo Club, Seal S.C, St Paul’s S.C. Roxboro Sharks, Limerick Swimming Club and High Performance squad. Limerick Master’s were delighted with the success of the event and hugely appreciated the level of participation as well as the public support for the fundraising and the support of UL Arena who provided the wonderful venue for this unique sporting day An incredibly positive start to 2009, and further proof, if such was needed that the sporting community of Limerick, especially the swimming community, never know how to say never. |

Club Christmas Gala at St. Enda’s on Thurs 18th night from 8 – 10pm.
Shannon Rowing Clubhouse afterwards for food & craic. Cost: 10euro. Partners free.
Finishing on Monday, 22nd Dec. at UL.
Starting back training on Monday, 5th Jan. ’09 at UL.
