On Saturday 26th November, Limerick Masters attended the Mallow Masters Gala. Despite the cold weather, and an early start, 22 members turned up to compete for the club. The club had a brilliant performance on the day and brought home a significant medal tally:
Individual:
33 gold 23 silver 12 bronze
Relays:
8 Gold 4 silver 4 bronze.
The swimmer of the Gala was Paddy Healy. Well done Paddy.
The club recently started entering our relays as mixed relays. This has proven to be a great success, and an enormous amount of fun. So far, our medal count is climbing, with 16 medals won for the relays in Mallow. This adds to our tally of medals from the mixed relays in at the Celtic Masters Gala in October.
We would like to welcome 3 first time swimmers for Limerick Masters in Mallow: Liz Ryan, Laura Freney-Graham and Ida Mulcahy. Delighted to have you with us.
Flipper race – The flipper race was won by Greg Scanlon, who managed to swim 25meters underwater in 18.37seconds. This happens to be the exact same time as he did last year!. Well done Greg.
As always, we enjoy the “swim down” which was held in the Arches Bar in Mallow. Here we enjoyed some rugby and some very well deserved dinner and drinks. The highlight of the evening was our team being awarded “Team of the Gala”. This is an award we have won for 5-consecutive year. We were delighted with our win, and the atmosphere on the bus was “joyous” all the way home. The celebrations for those who had the energy, continued in “Tommy’s” when we got back to Limerick. A special mention to “Taxi-Tony” who made sure we all got home safely.
We would like to thank Mallow Masters for such a great day, and such a well-run gala. The atmosphere was very welcoming, and we really enjoyed their great hospitality. We are looking forward to welcoming them to Limerick for our own Gala, on March 3rd & 4th next year.
Also a big thanks to our coach John Dempsey who keeps us all in shape, but also for the headache of organising all those relays, and managing to get our individual times on all the relays and races throughout the day!!. Not an easy task. Thanks Coach.
