There was a great weekend of swimming at the Irish Open Long Course Masters Championship Gala on the 6th and 7th of March. In excess of 330 swimmers gathered in the UL arena over the weekend to partake in the event. Swimming commenced on Friday evening with 51 competitors in the 1500m freestyle. Norma Cahill from Ennis masters gave an outstanding performance to set a new European record at the 1500m distance and also at the 800m distance and in so doing won the Kearney 1500m trophy. She went on to compete in the 800m event on Saturday where she again broke the record she had set on Friday evening. Our congratulations to Norma for two fantastic swims.
There was a busy day on Saturday with some other great performances in particular from Dan Golden of NAC who set new Irish records in the 100m and 200m freestyle. A strong Aer Lingus team took the prize for the overall best club performance in the gala and our friends from Potters Bar in London again took the prize for the best overseas club despite a powerful performance from the Cambril team from Catalonia, Spain.
A great crowd retired to Finnegan’s Bar and restaurant for the post gala dinner and the gala awards.
Awards were made as follows:
Best Overseas Club Potters Bar, London
Best Visiting Club Aer Lingus, Dublin
Best Male Overseas Swimmer Isidoros Pagiavlos, Olympiacos, Greece
