Mallow Masters Defending the Title

A hoard of 32 swimmers descended on Mallow early on Saturday morning determined to retain our title as the Club of the Gala at the annual Mallow Masters Swimming Gala. After a gentle warm up it was down to the serious business of racing. It was clear from an early stage that Limerick were in pole position for another win. There was so much enthusiasm that Ger Purcell, Kevin Dennehy and Pearce Ryan invented a new event called the 450m freestyle. Unfortunately for them no medals were awarded but sure they can try again next year! There was loads of encouragement and to show the range of ages in the Limerick club one could hear from the back of the stand on occasion the chant “Come on dad!”. Overall the day was a great success with opportunity to meet friends from Sundays Well club in Cork, Kilkenny Masters and the entire membership of two from the Grand Masters Swimming Club in Edenderry amongst many others. Many congratulations to Mallow Masters on a well run event, a very sociable day and a fantastic spread of sandwiches, buns, tarts and cakes of every description. Some members of Limerick were overheard to say that they only came for the food! Well done to everyone and in particular to Edmeia Khan who picked up 8 individual gold medals and 2 relay golds. That must be a club record? Presentations and depressing Rugby results were followed by “Patricia the Stripper” and various other renditions on the bus back to Limerick.
