Take Your Culture, Go!/club news

Our committee have been wracking our artistic and creative minds to make this a gala to remember. Limerick is the 2014 City of Culture and this year we guarantee our gala will be awash with buckets of culture, talent and genius cos everyone knows there’s tons of culture in Limerick Citaaaay!
Sooooo to celebrate the committee have decided to award marks and medals for all forms of cultural expression exhibited in the gala. To set the standard our captains Brian and Gina will be making exhibitions of themselves throughout the gala (no change there!), and under the leadership of our “curator” Harry D’Harbisson the committee will be awarding points and medals for all things aesthetic. Creative tumble turns, inventive strokes, artistic dives, imaginative tattoos and expressive swaggers will all be awarded top marks. In addition all swimmers must interpret “Take Your Marks, Go!” in a manner that captures the culture of Limerick……that should be interesting.
Hats off to all our members who have so willingly agreed to share their artistic talents for our 2014 Limerick Masters of Culture Gala. Everyone knows we are a “competitive swimming club” but little do they know that we are also a “cultural swimming club”.
We are delighted to announce that our renowned photographer, John Van Garrett, will be capturing all our culturally rich swimming moves throughout the gala. John Van Garrett’s work is inspired by the godliness and aesthetic prowess of the Limerick Masters swimmers and their swan-lake type grace which Van Garrett has described as “pure poetry in motion”.
Our artist in residence Mike Mac, better known as Micasso, has been commissioned to capture the 2014 gala on canvas and we are privileged to have him on board. As he said himself “with nothing on but the timing clocks it will certainly be an interesting work of art!” We don’t doubt it Micasso!
Our writers too will be out in force. Some will be launching their books on the poolside. Fionnuala’s channel-chick lit book,“52,000 Strokes of Culture”, looks like an intriguing if not racey read not to mention Eileen’s new book “50 Metres of Grey!”. And our very own bard W.B.Tommy Moloney has teamed up with his auld pal Barney and together they will be reciting their pool poems such as “Not Raving but Drowning” and “Ode to Coach John”. Even our treasurer 50Cent Ryan has penned a delightful rap called “Cough up your Culture”,we can’t wait for that one!
And on the dance front, our very own “Thelma and Louise” ie Mary and Deirdre Crossroads will be dancing just there in a 24 hour Walls of Limerick Seán-nós-athon in aid of cowcrash victims. Well done cailíní deasa!
Finally in an inspired move, this year the podium will be transformed into a Speakers Corner. Our flip flop philosopher Gregistotle will be hosting renowned expert, Colm O’SheaGuevara, to speak on Limericks Cultural Revolution. What an honour it is to have O’SheaGuevara in Limerick.

So there you have it lads, an extravaganza of honest to God pure Limerick a boy da kid culture. Well done to our inspired and ingenious committee and club members who are all seriously deadly, daecent and rapid people. It is my privilege to work with you all to put Limerick Masters on the cultural map of the world once and for all. Fair fecks to the lot of ye!
