Veni, vidi, vici. On a beautiful day in the centre of Limerick City the Thomond Swim took place. The annual swim is attracting an increasing number of participants and this year, even with other open water events in Cork, Fermoy and Galway over 80 swimmers took to the water. As with recent Thomond swims the main prizes went to clubs from outside the city with Dublin clubs taking the laurels this year. Some very positive news overnight. We have now gotten the green light for Special Membership with Swim Ireland. If you wish to participate in the Thomond Swim you can now become an associate member of Limerick Masters for €15. Limerick Masters Swimming Club host the annual Thomond Swim for 2014 on Saturday 26th July. The start time will be 6.30 which should make for a spectacular event in the early evening on a summer weekend. The course will remain the same as previous years starting at the slipway at St Michaels Rowing Club travelling upriver under Sarsfield Bridge to a turning buoy above the Curragower, under King John’s Castle, the courthouse, Arthur’s Quay, Shannon Rowing Club and back down to finish at St Michael’s The overall distance is 1800m. What a day – what a swim – air temperature 31 – water temperature 25 – 72 swimmers. The Thomond Swim was, by common consent, a most enjoyable swim and with the low volume of water in the Shannon times were fast. The river was alive with swimmers and boats, 15no. for the event. With the boardwalk along the riverbank spectators were able to follow the swim at their ease. The race started and finished this year in St. Michael’s Rowing Club. Thomond Swim (Thomond is the Gaelic for North Munster) The Thomond Swim starts from the slipway at St Michael’s Boat Club on the north shore of the river Shannon and then the route takes the swimmers along by O’Callaghan Strand under Sarsfield Bridge along by the side of Clancy Strand past the Old Barracks (O’Callaghan and Clancy were two former Mayors of Limerick who were executed by the Black and Tans during the War of Independence).
